The Smart-TV "Stop Watching Us" 2-Minute Checklist

Why Are Smart TVs So Cheap at the Store? Because every modern Smart TV ships with ACR (Automatic Content Recognition) turned ON by default. Your TV takes silent screenshots of everything playing on the screen every few seconds—whether it's Netflix, cable, a Blu-ray, or an HDMI laptop—and sells your household viewing log to data brokers. Turn it off in 2 minutes using your remote:
TV Brand Exact Remote-Control Menu Path to Turn Off Screen-Snooping (ACR)
Samsung Smart TV Press Home → Settings → All Settings → General & Privacy → Terms & Privacy → Privacy Choices → Uncheck "Viewing Information Services" and "Interest-Based Advertisements".
LG Smart TV (webOS) Press Settings (Gear) → All Settings → General → System → Additional Settings → Turn "Live Plus" to OFF, and under Advertisement turn "Limit AD Tracking" to ON (also turn off Home Promotion).
Roku TV / Roku Stick Press Home → Settings → Privacy → Smart TV Experience → Uncheck "Use info from TV inputs". Then go to Privacy → Advertising and check "Limit ad tracking".
Amazon Fire TV Go to Settings (Gear) → Preferences → Privacy Settings → Turn OFF "Device Usage Data", "Collect App Usage Data", and "Interest-Based Ads".
Vizio SmartCast TV Press Menu / Gear → Admin & Privacy → Viewing Data → Toggle "Viewing Data" to OFF.
Sony / Google TV Go to Settings → Privacy → Ads → Enable "Delete advertising ID", and under Samba Interactive TV toggle it OFF.

Bonus Tip: The "Dumb TV" Upgrade

If your Smart TV's menus are sluggish and cluttered with ads, disconnect the TV from your home Wi-Fi entirely in its network settings and plug in a dedicated streaming box (like an Apple TV 4K or a de-bloated Android TV box) via HDMI. The TV returns to being a fast, silent display monitor that cannot phone home.
