How to Un-Hijack Your Windows 11 PC & Escape the OneDrive Trap

Why Your New Computer Feels Broken: When you set up Windows 11, Microsoft silently redirects your personal Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folders into a 5 GB OneDrive cloud folder. Once your family photos hit 5 GB, Windows puts red X icons on your files and nags you to pay a monthly subscription—even though your computer's actual hard drive has 500+ GB of empty space!

Step 1: Move Your Documents & Pictures Back to Your Real Hard Drive

  1. Click the OneDrive cloud icon in the bottom-right corner of your taskbar (next to the clock) and click the Gear icon → Settings.
  2. Click Sync and backup on the left, then click Manage backup.
  3. Turn OFF the switches for Desktop, Documents, and Pictures (click "Stop backup" when it asks).
  4. Important: Open File Explorer, go into OneDrive, select any files still sitting inside OneDrive's Documents/Pictures folders, and Move them back into This PC → Documents and This PC → Pictures.
  5. Once your files are safely back in your local folders, go back to OneDrive Settings → Account → click Unlink this PC, then uninstall OneDrive from Settings → Apps → Installed Apps if you don't use it.

Step 2: Turn Off Windows Recall, Start-Menu Ads & Copilot Nags (2 Minutes)

You can run the included windows11_sanity_shield.ps1 script, or flip these switches manually in Windows Settings:

Annoyance / Privacy Leak Exact Menu Path in Windows 11 Settings
Windows Recall (AI Screenshots) Settings → Privacy & security → Recall & snapshots → Turn Save snapshots to OFF and click Delete all snapshots.
Start Menu Ads & "Recommendations" Settings → Personalization → Start → Turn OFF "Show recommendations for tips, shortcuts, new apps, and more."
Fake "Finish Setting Up Your PC" Full-Screen Nag Settings → System → Notifications → Additional settings (at the bottom) → Uncheck all three boxes ("Suggest ways to get the most out of Windows").
Targeted Advertising ID & Activity History Settings → Privacy & security → General → Turn ALL 4 switches OFF.

Step 3: Don't Throw Away a Perfectly Good Windows 10 Laptop!

Microsoft blocks millions of fast 2016–2018 laptops from upgrading to Windows 11 just to force new PC sales. You have two great options:
