The Human Umwelt

DISPATCH REF // #29

We pride ourselves on being the most perceptive, hyper-aware generation in the history of the planet. We walk around with the sum total of all human knowledge glowing in our pants pockets. We scroll through our feeds and we genuinely believe we are seeing the whole, objective, massive reality of the universe.

We are not. We are actually living in a bespoke sensory deprivation tank. And to understand exactly how blind we truly are, we need to talk about ticks.

The World of the Tick

In the early twentieth century, a biologist named Jakob von Uexküll coined a deeply unsettling concept called the Umwelt.

The Umwelt is the specific, highly limited sensory world that a particular organism experiences. Uexküll used the example of a tick. A tick is completely blind and completely deaf. To a tick, the stars in the sky do not exist. A symphony does not exist. The Mona Lisa does not exist.

The tick’s entire universe is exactly three sensory inputs: the smell of butyric acid (that is the scent of mammalian sweat), the temperature of thirty-seven degrees Celsius (blood heat), and the physical texture of hair. That is it. That is the entire scope of its reality. It hangs on a branch in a completely dark, silent void, waiting for those three specific triggers.

The Digital Bug

The algorithm has turned us into digital ticks.

When we log onto the internet, we think we are looking out of a window at the real world. But the algorithm has carefully constructed a personalized, tightly sealed Umwelt around our heads.

The machine strips away all the nuance, all the contradictory evidence, and all the chaotic beauty of the human experience. It reduces our vast reality down to exactly three things: the smell of viral dopamine, the comforting heat of tribal validation, and the sticky texture of political outrage.

If a piece of information does not fit those three criteria, the algorithm simply deletes it from our reality. We spend hours scrolling through our timelines, completely blind and completely deaf to the actual universe, just waiting for the familiar smell of digital sweat so we can latch on and gorge ourselves.

Voluntary Blindness

Here is the really upsetting part. We love to play the victim. We love to complain that the tech billionaires built these evil echo chambers and trapped us inside them against our will.

I’m sorry, but that’s bullshit.

The algorithm is just a Perfect Mirror. The tragic truth is that we want to be ticks! The actual universe is vast, chaotic, highly nuanced, and utterly terrifying. Having to constantly update our worldview based on new, contradictory information is exhausting.

Being a tick is just easier. A tick never has to suffer an existential crisis. A tick never has to admit it is wrong. It just hangs on a branch in the dark and waits for a meal. We voluntarily accept the algorithmic Umwelt because the blindness is comforting. We prefer the tiny, predictable Us vs Them narratives over the terrifying chaos of the real world.

True awakeness is not about achieving some mystical, floating state of enlightened nirvana or some sanctification by some man-made God. It is far more brutal than that.

True perception is the agonizing process of forcing ourselves to look at the terrifying, complicated things that exist outside of our own specific outrage filter. It is the conscious, daily choice to step out of the dark void, to reject the comforting smell of the algorithm, and to actually live like a primate instead of an arthropod.
